This book is not scuba diving-related, but the book is about how to find your focus and increase your attention. If you are a diver constantly trying to improve, it can be a life-saving skill. That’s why sharing this book may be helpful.

The book summarizes what evidence/science there is to improve one’s focus and awareness. The author found that mediation is one of the best ways to improve one focus and attention through research.

I have dabbled with meditation for several years, so I know there are several forms of meditation practices, each making different claims as to their benefit. And how long you need to meditate before you can reap any benefits has often left me at a loss.  Well, peak mind is one book that breaks down all the meditation methods available. Four practices have been found to lead to the most benefit. Not only that, but the book will even answer my last question of how much meditation is required to lead to measurable benefits.

The Author, Amishi P. Jha, a neuroscientist, takes you on her journey of understanding how the brain works and how magnificent it is. She explains why we forget so much of our day. She also explains why that may be a good thing. Through various research studies involving everyone from laypeople with no mediation training to master meditators.

Amishi discovers mediation is most effective at fostering awareness and focus. She distills the Four meditation practices that will lead to increasing your focus and daily attention. She learns how long one needs to meditate to get results. The final chapter has some practical exercises that make the information easy to apply to your life.

I liked how practical and tangible Peak Mind made it to improve your focus and attention. The book also elaborates on many of the incidental findings of adding an “attention practice” or meditation practice to your life. As someone who works the night shift, I can always have more of these qualities, from better sleep to better mood regulations.

As divers or just someone looking for a good read to learn something new to better your life, I would give Peak Mind 5 stars
