As an avid diver who loves reading, this book gets 5/5 off the top.
If you consume Clives Cussler novels or love Tom Clancy or Michael Chriton, you won’t be disappointed with Shadow Divers, and the best part is that it is a true story.
Showdown Divers takes you on a whirlwind adventure when two passionate divers find a German U-boat in a location where no record shows there should be a U-boat. Leads a crack team of technical divers to race to identify the wreck.
While trying to identify the wreck, treasure fever takes over some of the divers involved, leading to some deaths and old foes having to mend their way to accomplish their goals of being the first to identify the wreck of U-boat 869.
The action-packed nature of this book, filled with numerous plot twists and journeys to encounter historical figures, practically begged for a cinematic adaptation. The historical significance of the shipwreck, the relentless pursuit of the individuals involved, and the tragic fate of those who gave their all would undoubtedly captivate a wide-ranging audience.
So, I conducted some Google searches and wasn’t alone in thinking this book could be adapted into an epic film. As of September 2023, although the film isn’t currently in production, it has secured the rights, and they’ve chosen producers and directors. You can verify this information by checking out this link here. One notable producer selected for the project is Ridley Scott, known for his involvement in epic adventure movies like Gladiator, White Squall, and Kingdom of Heaven.
For all these reasons, I give this book 5/5. It is a fun, quick read with a ton of history and incredible dive stories. Any diver on a surface interval would have time well spent reading Shadow Divers.
